The Bulgarian ensemble Yulangelo was founded in April 1998. The founders are Yulian Perikliev (basso), Andrey Zahariev (tenor) and George Karkelanov (baritone). Yulangelo is an abbreviation of the three gentlemen’s first names. Graduates of National Lyceum for Ancient languages and cultures “St. Konstantin-Cyril the Philosopher” they first came in touch with church-Slavonic music as soloists of the college choir directed by Lyudmila Dobrinova, leader of the much cherished expedition PELEA. In the period 1987-1993 were all soloists in the chamber choir for ancient Bulgarian music at the school, which has given over 200 concerts in Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Poland and Greece.
Since 2000 Yossif Gerdjikov (director of music) and Plamen Beykov (bass) joined the group. Currently it also includes Dimitrii Gamburtzev (tenor), Plamen Papazikov (tenor), Kostadin Genchev (kaval), Stoyan Pavlov (drums) and Kiril Petrov (percussion). The ensemble has pursued an active concert life all over Bulgaria. The group has appeared in four productions for Bulgarian National Television and for Bulgarian National Radio. They have recorded a CD and music for several documentaries. In December 2004 Yulangelo issued CD titled “The Manuscript” granted by Soros Center for Cultural Policies, Swiss Cultural Programme Bulgaria and National Culture Fund. It was composed of Bulgarian Church Songs. Those were master compositions of the Rila Monastery monks, included in an early 19th century script. This was an attempt of Yulangelo’s side to explore the influence of the singing traditions of the different ethnographic regions of Bulgaria to the church singing. In 2006 with the support of Sofia Municipality, the group issued a CD of popular Bulgarian Renaissance and patriotic songs. The aim of this project was to keep and preserve the cultural traditions of the community, and it was distributed among schools and cultural centres in Sofia. In the end of 2006, the group issued the “Golden Concert Programme” CD, consisting of the best of the groups repertoire.
Yulangelo specialises in liturgical Eastern Orthodox chant and in authentic Bulgarian folklore songs, which are close to the modal scale colours of the Eastern Church’s singing.
Yulangelo explores the influence of the singing tradition of different ethnographic regions of Bulgaria on church singing. Their performance, enriched by Bulgarian wooden shepherd’s flute (kaval), drum percussions (tapan) and the sounds of specific objects used in the Liturgy, such as wooden clapper (klepalo), censer (kadilnitsa) and bells clearly emphasizes the links between ecclesiastical music and Bulgarian folklore.
